Bowls: Foster in world-class form to see off fellow Scot Anderson

Paul Foster made it a double for the East Lothian challenge in this year's Potters World Indoor Bowls Championship after an unexpectedly comfortable opening win against young pretender Stewart Anderson in the Singles at the Great Yarmouth.

Foster, the world No.?1, only dropped one end in the opening set, and although Anderson, from Ayrshire, squared 3-3 after four ends of the second, Foster won in straight sets 9-1, 8-4 to join clubmate Alex Marshall in next week's second round. Foster said: "I thought it would be a really hard game because all of our previous matches have gone right to the wire." Foster's second round opponent on Tuesday will be Irishman Jonathan Ross, who now comes under the Scottish banner and is based in Paisley.

Ross, seeded 15, found a rich vein of form to see off talented Aussie qualifier Barrie Lester from Melbourne 6-4, 9-5.

Darren Burnett also encountered an all-Scottish head to head but won a hard fought 7-5, 8-11, 2-0 contest over former East Lothian stalwart Steven Glen, who now represents Falkirk.

The Singles event now breaks until Monday. The mixed pairs event was getting under way today, with Lothian duo Alex Marshall and Carol Ashby beginning the defence of their title against the new partnership of Alison Merrien from Guernsey and Nottingham's Simon Skelton. Teviotdale's Julie Forrest partners Ian Bond in the same half of the quarter-final draw. Paul Foster and Debbi Stavrou are in the opposite half.
